People

Mexico has to day more than 110 million inhabitants, but the people are very diversified. There are more than 50 different Indian cultures, but the majority of the population is "Mestizos", which means a mixture between indigenous people and Europeans.

In some places of Mexico, the indigenous people have not been integrated in society and sometimes that means that they do not speak Spanish! The authenticity of its people is an amazing adventure for visitors who have a whole world to discover.

t the other hand you have global Mexico, with people who speak many languages and who have traveled the world. Contrasts are immense and this is the face of modern Mexico and its birth goes back to the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores in the early 16th Century.

In a survey made worldwide about who is happiness, Mexicans turned out to be the second happiest people in the world after Brazilians! Mexicans are very friendly, helping and polite. Always with a smile on their face, they love life and do not want to miss a chance to enjoy every second. As a foreigner, you are in very good hands, since the Mexican culture is based on hospitality and respect.

Culture

Thousands of books could be written about Mexican culture. Mexico is an extremely rich country and it takes a lifetime to discover its many faces and features. There is a great mixture between the ancient cultures of the indigenous people; the Mayas, the Aztecs, the Zapotecas, the Chichimecas, the Mixtecas, the Lacandones of Chiapas, the Huiholes amongst many others.

For thousands of years each of these groups of people developed their own languages, cultures and civilizations until the day the Spanish invaders put their feet on Mexican ground and made the starting-point for what Mexico is today; an immense mixture of influences.

The Mexican culture is an ingredient of what you call the Mexican ¨sabor¨; that un-describable feeling Omni-present on Mexican ground. It is in the warmth in its people, the amazing taste and variety of its food, the strong colors of the artworks, handcrafts and its dark humor.  It is what makes people fall in love with Mexico and make them want to stay.

Long before the conquistadors (the Spanish people that did colonize Mexico) came in the 14th century.  The origin inhabitants had developed a solid art culture in areas like ceramics and pottery, music, poetry, sculpture and weaving. Most typical for Mexican origin arts are the strong colors and peculiar patterns. After the conquest this art quality was influenced by European techniques and religious themes. This hybrid of stiles is obvious within most of the art forms, as architecture, music, painting and sculpturing.

As a result of the favorable climate there is always an enormous supply of fresh raw products. Tomatoes, chili, vanilla, cacao, zucchinis, avocados, corianders and peanuts are examples of the food products that origins from Mexico.

Climate

Mexico has a beautiful climate and many climate zones. All from the North, where you have large areas of desert, to tropical jungle on the Coast Lines, to the eternal spring climate of for example Guadalajara and the Chapala area.

The Chapala area is considered as one of the best places in the world to live because of the excellent climate and air pressure conditions.  The vegetation is always exuberant, extremely green and the temperature stays at a very pleasant level.

The raining season is from June-September and ensures a template climate and an extremely favorable environment for all flora and fauna.

The climate is very comfortable all year around, with an average of around 25 degrees (over 60 Fahrenheit), depending on the location where you are staying. By the coast there is a mild tropical climate. In Mexico City the weather is a little cooler and the air is a little dryer than on the coasts. The City is situated on approximately 2,200 m altitude on the Mexican high land plateau.

Beaches and Scuba Diving

Mexico has 9,330 km of Coast Line and is surrounded by oceans and seas of various characteristics, such as the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean. There is a beach for every taste; whether that means a Blue Ocean with rocky ground or the turquoise, transparent water and white, silky sand of the Caribbean, or a virgin beach surrounded by mountains, or if the main purpose for you is to enjoy the ocean on a surfing board to perfect waves.

Some famous beaches are Cancun, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel, Acapulco and The Riviera Maya. However, there are innumerable undiscovered beaches in Mexico, with an astonishing beauty. Not long ago, an until then unknown beach on an Island called Xolboh outside of Cancun was denominated the most beautiful beach in the world by National Geographic!

Mexico is also a Paradise for scuba divers. Riviera Maya, for example, is the worlds’ second largest living coral reef. It is situated on the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean and offers year-round tropical climate and an astonishing environment.  The sub-marine water is amazing; here the divers swim with giant turtles, dolphins and enjoy the excellent diving of the Island of Cozumel, named by Jacques Cousteau as of the best diving spots in the world. Or what about diving inside of a fresh-water daylight cavern system formed over 10;s of thousands years ago? Do not miss Mexican beach-life; it is one of the best ones and most variable in the world.

THE PYRAMIDS OF CHICHEN ITZÁ; THE CITY OF THE MAYAS

Mexico has some of the most impressive archaeological sites and constructions in the whole world.

Forget about the Pyramids in Egypt and discover and land full off ancient cities, some of them still unfound… The sophisticated civilization of the Mayas had its peak in the years of 250-950 A.C. They developed calendars based on their knowledge about astrology and mathematics and constructed perfect pyramids amongst other things.

In the beginnings of the 19th century, the Mayas disappeared without a trace. Chichen Itza is situated some 200 km from the city of Cancun.

Most people know the Aztecs for their historical importance.Their Capital was situated in the outskirts of what is today Mexico City and is know as Teotihuacán and has two of the most famous pyramids of the world; the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon.

Economy & Purchasing Power

Mexico has still large class differences. The Mexican middle class is progressing strongly after many decades of being held back from growth.

The worldwide investments in Mexico are increasing immensely, especially since the President Felipe Calderon came to power. In macro-economic terms, Mexico is more stable than ever and is opening up more day-by-day to development and globalization.

The country has a very large potential. Since 2004, the Mexican economy has grown with more than 8 % per year. Tourism, agriculture, oil and gas production are some of the most important industries around. Besides an extensive cooperation with the USA through the NAFTA Treaty, Mexico has a large spectrum of free trade agreements, i.e. with the UE.

The Euro and Dollar is very strong in comparison to the Mexican Peso. Also, Mexico is a relatively cheap country to live is. The result is a strong purchasing power for foreigners. This is one of the many reasons why many Americans, Canadians and Europeans decide to settle down and retire in Mexico.
You can read more on that in the page "Live in Mexico".
